The Shape of the Journey

The Elbe river cruise from Berlin to Prague is the river’s signature trip, and it is a little different from a Rhine or Danube sailing. Neither city stands on the Elbe, so the itinerary is built in three parts: time in Berlin, a sailing on the river through Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and the Czech borderlands, and time in Prague. How those parts are joined varies by line.

A typical southbound pattern

  • Berlin: one or more hotel nights, with city touring.
  • Potsdam: a coach visit to Sanssouci on the way to the ship.
  • Embarkation on the middle Elbe: often near Wittenberg or Magdeburg on Viking-style packages; some ships start in the Berlin area itself.
  • Sailing south: Wittenberg, Dessau, Torgau, Meissen and Dresden.
  • Saxon Switzerland: Bad Schandau, the Bastei and Königstein.
  • Bohemia: Děčín or Litoměřice, then a coach to Prague for hotel nights.

Berlin is usually a hotel stay, not a dock.

Northbound departures simply reverse the order. Viking has sold this trip in several shapes — including versions with a hotel at each end and versions that start on the river near Dresden — and CroisiEurope’s paddle-wheel ships run their own Berlin–Prague programme. That is why we always say: read the specific departure, not just the brochure title.

Choosing Your Departure

When you compare one Elbe river cruise from Berlin to Prague with another, look at four things: how many nights are on the ship versus in hotels, where you board, whether Potsdam and Saxon Switzerland are included excursions, and what the line’s low-water plan is. A trip that looks shorter on the ship may in fact give you more time in the two capitals, which many travelers prefer.

Flights are open-jaw: into Berlin, home from Prague, or the reverse. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise can quote air with the cruise, or you can price it yourself on Airfares for Less. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the ship actually sail into Berlin and Prague?

It depends on the line and the departure. Many packages use hotel nights in both cities and coach transfers to and from the ship, because neither capital sits on the Elbe itself. Some vessels do reach the Berlin waterways. Always read the day-by-day itinerary.

Is it better to go northbound or southbound?

Neither is better. Starting in Prague lets you finish with Berlin’s big museums; starting in Berlin saves Prague’s Old Town for the end. Choose the direction that gives you the best flight times.

How many nights are spent on board?

Commonly about a week, with hotel nights added at one or both ends on the longer packages. Our advisors will spell out the split before you book.
